Can anyone share their SP Jain Interview Experience?

Body

I am keen to know more about the process and the kind of questions they ask at the SP Jain MBA interviews. If any of you can share, it would be very helpful.

SPJIMR’s group interview experience would definitely hit the top of the most memorable interview experiences throughout my life. The reason is that my interview took a direction which I wasn’t expecting, or worse, even prepared for it. Fortunately, I managed to sail through confidently by reasoning on the spot.

WAT- If you were to time travel and visit an era, which it would be and what would you do?(20 mins)

Ans- Unfortunately, I was unable to recall any English eras per se, so I went with the elaboration of β€˜ yuga’ like tretayug, dwaparayug, etc.

    GI 1- 35-40 mins

Group- 3 for marketing and 2 for finance

    P1- Marketing Prof ; P2- Finance Prof

    M- Mahek

    P1-TMAY in 1 min

M-prepared answer(mix of both personal and professional achievements)

P2- What have you been doing since your graduation?

M-spoke about preparing for CAT, working on my skill enhancement and an online course on strategy by IIMB

    P2-what is strategy?

    M- answered

P2-Why do you call make up as a hobby?(from my form)

M- justified as to how this is an art and the market of it is growing YoY.

P2- If makeup is so good then why it is only used by girls and why don’t boys use it?

M- spoke about the stereotype that exists and how innately it has been engraved in the society that makeup is for girls. Also mentioned how effective marketing can break this stereotype.( PS: This is not the verbatim answer, I spoke more on it which I cannot recall)

P2- Why should one be using chemicals on face?

M- mentioned some examples of brands that are coming up with organic products and their increasing traction in the market.

    P1- a marketing campaign u liked and one which u didn’t like?

M- mentioned the Red Label’s campaign which I liked and related it to the Maslow’s theory and Bumble’s campaign which I didn’t like.

P1-Since you like acting, as a marketing head of a movie, how can u make it a blockbuster ?

M- spoke about teasers, premiers and online engagement by the lead actors can be leveraged.

P1- Is intentionally creating controversies before a movie a right mechanism to publicise?

M- took a neutral stance by stating the limits that has to kept in mind while creating good PR activities. Cited example of Poonam Pandey’s controversial PR activity that went belly up.

P1- tell me in one word why should we reject you

M- turned down that question and justified why I don’t deserve rejection

Review- Except TMAY, activities after graduation and favourite marketing campaign, I wasn’t expecting any of the questions asked in GI1.

(All made it to GI 2)

    GI 2- 40-50 mins

    2 panelists(different from GI 1)

[Everyone in the group had to present their points for the following questions. No question was addressed to only one individual.]

P1 - If you were the leader of the India bloc, what would you do to garner votes and win the election.

M- spoke about lifting the women , promising fulfilling opportunities to the youth, support for the marginalised community etc.

P2- you are a marketing head of a company and offered a multibillion dollar deal from an organisation on which the survival of ur company depends. The authorisation dealer asks for a 10% bribe . Would u give the bribe or shut down your company? Justify

M- answered that I would turn down the offer and look for other avenues like loans or personal funding to sustain.(cross-questions)

P1- Speak about an instance where you showed resilience

M- spoke about a personal experience

P2- Growth mindset is killing the society. For or against.

M- took a neutral stance and mentioned that the drive with which the person is chasing the growth is the deciding factor. Gave examples.

Review- Both the panel were chill but GI2 was filled with lots of cross-questions on the ideas and opinions. So GI2 was more rigorous than GI1.

Academics was not the focus, but logic and clarity on situation and application based questions definitely was.

So try to stay calm , take a few seconds before answering.

    Hope this helps!

    Verdict: Direct convert :)

WAT (20 MINS) : technology is making people alone. What are your thoughts on that?

Panelists: 2 female professors (in their 40s I guess)

They were very warm and welcoming

    1. Why do you think we are conducting this second round of interview?
    2. Okay here’s a situation: in my previous organisation one high potential manager, who was in direct contact with the director . And this manager started inflating the bills he would put for reimbursement. The director left the company after a while and later HR got to know that this person was doing this . When confronted he said the director told him that he can do it.what will you do in this case if you were the Hr

    3. Adding to that if you get to know that he is the sole bread winner in his house , and if you terminate him he won’t get job anywhere else . What will you do in that case

    4. If then you know from the ex director that he never told the manager that he can inflate the bills . He said he never checked the bills and just used to approve them for everyone . And he can give it in writing that he never did this . With this added context what will you do ?

    5. If another company Hr calls you to ask about his character , will you hide about this incident

6 . They asked one guy about his interest in eSports

    7. They asked me about digital marketing ( because of my work ex ) . Don’t you think it is unethical to collect data like that and show ads . I feel uncomfortable if I know that someone had my data. Then everyone was asked to put their opinion .

    8. They asked another girl what will she do if her team isn’t satisfied with the project they are getting and demand for another project. Mereko ye kaam nahi woh kaam do . Aisa bolenge toh kya karoge?

9 . They asked another guy. You say you want to retire by 40. What do you want to do after that. And why do you want to retire.

    10. They asked me about why I think there is no concept of hell and heaven . What do I think about karma . ( I wrote in my form that there is no hell and heaven according to me , but I appreciate the idea)

The interview went on 45-50 mins

It was more like a discussion.

    Pre-Interview Process
Reached 20 minutes early for verification, which was just a simple face checkβ€”only a photo ID was needed. After that, we were given 20 minutes to read a case study.
The case was about an entrepreneur's take on financial freedom, arguing that chasing it in your 20s is a bad idea.
Instead, he suggested either living with parents to save money or managing expenses independently, highlighting the pros and cons of both approaches.

    Group Interview 1 (Gl-1)

My panel had five people and was led by two professors: one from HR (female) and the other from Finance (male). The HR professor spoke the most.
It started with introductions, and they kept interrupting to dig deeper into specific points.
Since I'm a fresher in my final year of engineering, with no formal finance background but shortlisted for PGDM Finance and PGDM BM, I was asked:
β€’ Difference between shares and bonds
β€’ What are preference shares, and how do they work?
β€’ Which finance courses have I taken, and what was my favorite?
β€’ What was taught in that course?
The finance professor asked technical questions, while the HR professor gave a consulting scenario:
"You're a CFO and your company has made a good profit. Would you distribute it as dividends or reinvest in R&D?"
Since most others had work experience, they were asked about career transitions and why an MBA.
    A finance candidate was asked:
"How would you assess a company's financial health without financial statements?"
He couldn't answer, so it was passed to me.

Throughout, the HR professor kept calling me by other names, possibly to test my attentiveness. Also, they kept asking for opinions on others' answers.
    Final question:
"Despite high salaries, employees are quitting jobs more than ever. If you had to ask a CEO two questions about this, what would they be?"
At the end of GI-1, three out of five from my panel moved to GI-2. Overall, 50-60% of candidates got eliminated in this round

    Group Interview 2 (GI-2)
We were rearranged into new groups, and my panel now had four people.
First task: Introduce yourself without mentioning your resumeβ€”so a different intro was needed.
    Three main questions:
    1. Ethical dilemma - You have a business idea to connect kidney donors with recipients. Is this ethical? Would you pursue it? If yes, how?
    2. Case study stance - Where do you stand on the financial freedom case study?
    3. Leadership challenge - You lead a team of six. One person is brilliant and innovative but lazy, unpunctual, and lacks discipline. What do you do?
Unlike GI-1, cross-discussion was allowed, but it was better to be strategic rather than interrupt unnecessarily.

This round was much more chill, mainly to see how well we justified our viewpoints and how confidently we stood by our decisions.
