Beyond the 90%: Decoding the IIM Bangalore PGP profile

Body

There is a pervasive myth in the MBA prep world: that you need to be a topper from Class 10 to Undergraduate to even clear the IIM Bangalore cutoffs. If you look at the PGP 2023 data, while the averages are undeniably high, the "lowest" figures reveal a more nuanced story of holistic admissions.

Exam Lowest Highest Average Median
10th 70.17% 100% 93.29% 95.00%
12th 51.80% 99.67% 90.40% 92.20%
Bachelors 51.10% 99.25% 78.30% 79.82%

Distribution of Student Brackets

Exam 90-100% 80-90% 70-80% 60-70% <60%
10th 447 70 13 0 0
12th 335 154 37 3 2
UG 39 224 169

I agree with the 'holistic' point. If you have a solid narrative, work ex, and a great interview, those stats become just one part of the puzzle. IIMB cares about theย future impact, not just your past grades

The shift from 10th grade to UG is so real. I think it highlights that IIMB is adjusting for the difficulty difference between board exams and university degrees. A 95% in high school isn't the same as a 95% in a rigorous engineering college

Don't be fooled by the 'lowest' numbers, though. Notice how the median for 10th is 95%. You still need an incredible CAT score to compensate if your academic base isn't in that top tier. These are outliers, not the standard

Seeing the UG stats really changes my perspective. Iโ€™ve been so stressed about my 65% in Engineering, but knowing there are people in the <60% and 60-70% brackets in the batch gives me a huge confidence boost for my application
