FMS Summer Placements: Finance vs. S&M A Surprising Shift in Stipend Trends

Body

The latest stipend data from the FMS summer placement report is out, and it’s fueling some serious debate. For many of us, Finance has traditionally held the crown as the highest-paying domain, but the latest statistics show a different narrative emerging.

With an overall average stipend of 3.42 Lakhs and a median of 3.50 Lakhs, the numbers are impressive, but the domain-wise breakdown is where things get interesting. Seeing Sales & Marketing (S&M) outperforming Finance in average stipends highlights a shifting landscape in recruiter hiring priorities and the premium being placed on core marketing roles this season.

For those of us tracking these trends for our "Reality Checks," it raises a bigger question: Is this a temporary fluctuation, or are we witnessing a structural shift in how top-tier recruiters value these domains?

Crucial data for the upcoming season. It’s a good reminder to look at the median stats rather than just the top-end outliers when evaluating a college's placement health

I think the gap between domain stipends is narrowing across top B-schools. It’s no longer just about the Finance 'hype'—marketing roles in conglomerates are becoming just as lucrative.

FMS continues to justify its ROI. Even with Finance taking a slight back seat in stipends this time, the floor is still incredibly high compared to almost anywhere else

Interesting trend. Do you think this is driven by a specific set of FMCG recruiters, or is the consulting/finance hiring sentiment actually cooling down?
