Gender Diversity in IIMs: A Data Breakdown of the 2026 Cohorts

Body

Diversity is not just a statistic; it fundamentally alters the quality of case study discussions, group projects, and the overall perspective brought to the table. Some institutes have successfully moved the needle significantly, while others, particularly some of the more established legacy campuses, still show a slower shift in their gender composition.

To make sense of the data, we have categorized the IIMs based on their current female student representation.

Category Institutes
Diversity Leaders (>50%) IIM Jammu, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Vishakhapatnam, IIM Indore
Balanced Growth (35-49%) IIM Rohtak, IIM Trichy, IIM Kashipur, IIM Shillong, IIM Amritsar, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore, IIM Sirmaur
Developing Range (21-34%) IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Nagpur, IIM Udaipur, IIM Lucknow, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Raipur
Early Stage (<20%) IIM Ranchi, IIM Mumbai

  • The "Newer" IIM Advantage: There is a clear trend where newer IIMs (like Jammu and Vishakhapatnam) are prioritizing gender diversity more aggressively in their selection criteria compared to legacy campuses.

  • The Legacy Gap: It is worth noting that while legacy campuses (like Ahmedabad and Calcutta) are seeing improvements, their numbers are traditionally lower, likely influenced by the higher volume of "General Engineer" (mostly male) candidates in the applicant pool for those specific programs.

  • Impact on Culture: Institutes hitting the 50% mark are effectively creating a classroom environment that more closely mirrors real-world corporate demographics, which is a major selling point for recruiters focused on D&I (Diversity & Inclusion).

A classroom with 50% gender diversity changes the entire vibe of the B-school experience. The case discussions are so much more balanced compared to the male-dominated ones I’ve heard about in the past

I always find it surprising that the legacy IIMs still struggle with this. Is it purely due to the CAT profile of the applicants, or are there internal selection changes they haven't made yet?

t’s interesting to see the gap between the newer IIMs and the legacy ones. Jammu and Vizag hitting over 50% is a massive statement. Hopefully, the older IIMs follow suit in the coming years
