IIM Guwahati 2026: The "Baby IIM" with a Powerhouse Pedigree

Body

The entry of IIM Guwahati (IIMG) as India's 22nd IIM has sent ripples through the 2026 MBA aspirant community. Mentored by the legendary IIM Ahmedabad, this institute offers a unique bridge for those who have a strong profile but might have slightly missed the 99th percentile mark required by the older "A-B-C" IIMs. With a inaugural batch of just 70 seats, the competition is tight, but the accessible cut-offs make it a strategic goldmine.

The Selection Blueprint: 65:35 Split

Unlike some institutes that rely heavily on the interview alone, IIM Guwahati is following a rigorous mathematical model for its first batch. Your admission is determined by two main pillars:

  1. CAT 2025 Performance (65% weightage): High stakes on your percentile.

  2. Normalized Academic Rating (NAR) (35% weightage): This looks at your Class 10th, 12th, Graduation, and Work Experience.

The "sweet spot" for work experience here is 12 to 36 months. If you are a fresher, your academic scores in 10th and 12th need to be exceptionally high (ideally 90%+) to compensate for the work-ex points.

Don't be fooled by the 'low' 85 cutoff. Since there are only 28 General seats, the actual conversion will probably happen at 97-98+ unless your academics are insane. 35% weightage for NAR is huge

85 percentile for a General call from an IIM-A mentored institute? This is literally a gift. Even if the permanent campus isn't ready, that mentorship tag on the degree is worth its weight in gold
