IIM Udaipur Placement Analysis: Are Median Salaries Plateauing??

Body

The latest placement data from IIM Udaipur for the 2023โ€“25 batch presents a fascinating shift in corporate hiring dynamics compared to the previous cycle. When analyzing these figures, the primary trend isn't just about total compensation itโ€™s about a structural rotation in hiring functions and industry appetite.

The most notable observation is the Finance functionโ€™s surge in recruitment volume, jumping from 3.69% to 15%. This suggests a strategic realignment within the institute's placement cell to tap into BFSI demand despite the broader market correction. However, this volume increase has come with a corresponding dip in median salary, dropping from 19.5 LPA to 17.64 LPA. This indicates that while more roles are available, the entry-level premium for finance roles at "New IIMs" is currently facing downward pressure, likely due to macroeconomic shifts and tightening corporate budgets.

Similarly, we see a contraction in the Product Management space (from 6.71% to 2.65%), reflecting the broader tech-sector slowdown that has affected many Tier-1 and Tier-2 institutes. On the flip side, General Management roles have seen an uptick in volume (16.1% to 19.53%), acting as a stabilizer for the batch as specialized tech/product roles become more competitive.

For current aspirants and prospective candidates, this data is a "sanity check." It highlights that while marquee Consulting roles remain lucrative, the "median" salary landscape is undergoing a recalibration. The shift toward Finance and General Management roles signifies that firms are prioritizing core business stability over speculative tech-led expansion. The key takeaway for the coming cycles is clear: flexibility in function is no longer just a "nice-to-have" trait it is essential for navigating the current placement reality.

The drop in Product Management roles is painful to look at, but unfortunately, itโ€™s the reality across most Tier-1 campuses right now. Iโ€™d be curious to see if these Finance roles are core IB roles or if they are more mid-office/corporate finance. The salary difference implies they might be the latter

Seeing Finance jump from 3% to 15% is wild. Itโ€™s a massive pivot in just one year. Do you think this is purely a result of the placement committeeโ€™s outreach, or are more students actually shifting their interests away from Product/Consulting due to the market
