What is a good CAT percentile to get calls from IIMs with my profile (e.g. 7/7/7 or 8/7/6)?

Body

How much does academic diversity or gender diversity help? Can 99.5+ percentile compensate for average or poor academics?Do Tier-2/Tier-3 colleges or work-ex from small startups count against me?Which IIMs are more profile friendly and which ones are rigid? Is work experience from a non-core background seen negatively? Please, any advice would suffice.

Academic diversity plus gender diversity definitely works in your favor. I have an 8/7/6 profile with a BCom degree and 1 year of experience at a CA firm. Got calls from IIM A, K, I, and all new IIMs with 98.9 percentile.IIM A has a diversity component in its shortlist formula (for females plus non-engineers).B is more work-ex + acads heavy, so didn’t get a call.C is purely academic + CAT score dependent. Even with average marks, being a non-engineer female gave me a real edge. Work-ex from a small firm didn’t hurt me either.

I had 7/7/7 and 2.5 yrs of work-ex from a small analytics firm. Scored 99.56 percentile in CAT 2023. Despite that, no calls from IIM A or B, and only a waitlist from IIM C. A, B, C are very rigid about academics unless you’re a CA, female, or from an underrepresented discipline.Even work-ex doesn’t help much unless it’s from a reputed firm or in a core role. I did get calls from IIM Lucknow, Trichy, MDI, NITIE, etc. They’re more lenient and consider recent performance and work experience more holistically.

So yes, 99.5+ can help, but it won’t completely compensate for poor acads at top 3.
