A Leadership Lesson That Didn’t Come From the Classroom

Body

MBA student nearly got hypothermia before learning one of the most important leadership lessons of his program

When we think about MBA learning, we usually imagine case studies, classrooms, and group presentations but sometimes the most memorable lessons show up in places you wouldn’t expect.

During an “extreme leadership trek” organized by Berkeley Haas School of Business, MBA student Alex Hernandez and his team were crossing a freezing river in Patagonia. The sun was setting, the temperature was dropping quickly, and everyone was exhausted.

Hernandez switched into problem-solving mode and kept pushing the group forward so they could reach the other side and set up camp.

In the process, he ignored his own limits.

It took a teammate noticing he was close to hypothermia and literally forcing warm food into his hands for him to pause.

That moment gave him a leadership lesson he hadn’t expected.

Sometimes leadership isn’t about pushing harder.
It’s about knowing when to accept help from your team, and sometimes those experiences end up teaching things no classroom lecture can.

Did you had any such experience something outside the classroom that unexpectedly taught you a leadership lesson?

In one student club I was part of, the best leader we had was someone who constantly checked in on the team instead of just focusing on results. That changed how I think about leadership sometimes the strongest teams come from leaders who prioritize people before performance.

Honestly, my undergrad college was extremely attendance focused, so most of our time was spent just making sure we didn’t fall below the required percentage. We didn’t really have experiences like treks or leadership programs like the ones at Berkeley Haas School of Business. Reading this makes me realize how much learning can happen outside the classroom.

Same here. My college was very strict about attendance and internal marks, so most of us never really got the chance to participate in activities where leadership could be tested in real situations. Stories like this make MBA programs at places like University of California, Berkeley sound like a completely different learning environment.
