Everything You Need to Know About the GMAT

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized, computer-based exam used globally by business schools to assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. It is developed and administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and is considered a critical part of the MBA admissions process for many top programs worldwide.

Purpose of the GMAT

The GMAT evaluates your ability to reason, analyze, and communicate effectively in a business context. Business schools use GMAT scores to predict your academic performance in an MBA or other graduate management program. A strong score signals that you have the analytical and decision-making skills required for success in a demanding curriculum.

GMAT Structure

As of the latest update, the GMAT Focus Edition (launched in 2023) has replaced the previous format and is now shorter and more focused. The test now includes three main sections:

  1. Quantitative Reasoning (QR)

    • Tests data interpretation and problem-solving using arithmetic, algebra, and basic geometry

    • Emphasis on logic and reasoning over complex math

    • 21 questions in 45 minutes

  2. Verbal Reasoning (VR)

    • Focuses on reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction

    • Measures your ability to understand and evaluate written arguments

    • 23 questions in 45 minutes

  3. Data Insights (DI)

    • A new section replacing Integrated Reasoning and part of the old Quant section

    • Assesses ability to analyze data from charts, tables, and multi-source datasets

    • 20 questions in 45 minutes

There is no longer an Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) in the GMAT Focus Edition.

Scoring

  • Total score range: 205 to 805 (in 10-point increments)

  • Each section is equally weighted

  • Percentile rankings are provided to show how your score compares to others

Top MBA programs typically look for scores in the 655 to 745 range, though this varies by school. A score above 700 is generally considered competitive at elite business schools.

Why Take the GMAT

  • Required or preferred by over 2,000 business schools and 7,000 programs globally

  • Demonstrates your readiness for graduate-level work

  • Can strengthen your application and differentiate you from other candidates

  • May be used for scholarship consideration

  • Valid for 5 years, allowing flexibility in application timing

GMAT vs GRE

Some business schools accept both GMAT and GRE scores. However, many still prefer the GMAT, especially for traditional MBA programs. If your long-term goal is business school or a career in consulting or finance, the GMAT may be the better choice.

Preparation Strategy

1. Know your target score

  • Research average scores for your target schools

  • Use that as a benchmark for your study plan

2. Create a realistic study timeline

  • Most candidates study for 2 to 4 months, averaging 10 to 15 hours per week

3. Use high-quality prep materials

  • Start with the Official GMAT Guide from GMAC

  • Use online platforms like GMAT Club, Manhattan Prep, or Target Test Prep

4. Practice under real test conditions

  • Simulate full-length exams to improve time management and endurance

5. Focus on weak areas

  • Diagnose your weaknesses and spend more time improving them

  • Review errors in practice tests to avoid repeating them

6. Consider professional help if needed

  • Private tutors or structured prep courses can provide accountability and expert guidance

Test Registration and Cost

  • Register online at www.mba.com

  • GMAT Focus Edition cost: around 275 to 300 USD, depending on location

  • You can take the test online or at a test center

  • You may take the GMAT up to five times in a rolling 12-month period, with a lifetime limit of eight attempts

Final Thoughts

The GMAT is more than just a test. It’s a strategic tool in your MBA application. A high score can open doors to top-tier business schools and increase your chances of landing scholarships or financial aid. While it is challenging, the GMAT is a learnable test — with the right preparation, planning, and persistence, you can achieve a score that reflects your potential.
