Are Freshers at a Real Disadvantage in IIM Placements?

Body

There is a persistent narrative in B-school circles that being a "fresher" is a liability in the interview stage. However, looking at the data, the reality is more nuanced. While firms often value the technical maturity and industry-specific context that experienced professionals bring, the data from top IIMs shows that a significant percentage of the batch consists of freshers.

The "disadvantage" often felt by freshers is less about their lack of work experience and more about the narrative challenge. Experienced candidates have a built-in professional trajectory to discuss; freshers must construct a story around academic excellence, leadership in extracurriculars, and the why behind their career pivot.

The 29% and 66% freshers at IIM-A and IIM-Indore respectively show that the opportunity is very real. The key for freshers is to be hyper-prepared for the 'Why MBA?' question. If your story shows a trajectory that leads naturally to the MBA, you have the same, if not better, odds than someone with 3 years of work experience who can’t justify their career path.

I’ve seen plenty of freshers clear top-tier consulting interviews precisely because they were 'blank slates' they were more willing to learn the firm's specific methodology compared to experienced hires who sometimes try to force their previous company's habits into the case study. It’s all about how you frame your problem-solving process.
