Body
The Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) section of the CAT exam has emerged as the "make or break" section for most aspirants in recent years. It is invariably the most challenging of the three sections. While confusing for some, it is indispensable to master DILR to achieve a high percentile score. This guide will give you a complete strategy to ace this changing section.
The Evolving Landscape of DILR
As of 2015, the DILR component has become significantly more challenging, with the line between Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR) becoming more and more indistinct in real CAT sets. You can have questions that involve combining growth rates and percentages with blank numbers in a grid that you need to figure out. This implies that practicing simple, easy puzzles is no longer adequate. The focus has moved from raw speed of calculation to solving the underlying logic.
Understanding the DILR Syllabus (or the Lack of It)
Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) do not release a set official syllabus for the DILR section. But it is immensely helpful to get accustomed to various question templates that CAT generally uses.
For Data Interpretation (DI):
• Begin with generic Bar Diagram based and Pie Chart sets so that you learn how to look at data and draw conclusions. It prevents you from being intimidated when you are presented with several figures.
For Logical Reasoning (LR):
• Begin solving puzzles using standard templates like grid puzzles and Einstein puzzles. These ones assist you in looking at constraints differently and finding central starting points in difficult puzzles.
• Familiarize yourself with common subjects such as Arrangements (Linear, Circular), different Puzzles (constraint-based), Networks, Games and tournaments, Cubes, Family trees, and 2D Space LR problems.
Developing the DILR Thought Process
Success in DILR depends on instilling the proper thought process instead of memorizing formulae or abstract ideas.
• Enhance Problem-Solving Ability: Candidates with a logical mind approach tend to perform better. This implies giving more emphasis towards solving irregular and "a-typical" problems.
• Develop Intuition: Practice daily habits such as doing puzzles like Sudoku, 2048, and crosswords. These help your brain develop the ability to quickly identify important constraints among different pieces of information.
• Critical Data Reading: Inculcate the practice of observing any data given to you in day-to-day life critically. Seek inferences and challenge conclusions made on the basis of that data.
• Efficient Representation of Information: Master the art of presenting information received in the appropriate form while working on puzzles, a very important step.
• Evaluate and Learn from Errors: Once you've practiced, write down where you went wrong and what stopped you from arriving at the right answer. This will help you recognize frequent error-prone areas and not commit the same errors on future tests.
Strategic Approach During the Exam
The DILR section is unstable, with performance differing from mocks. This means that there needs to be a strong plan for the exam day.
• Choosing the Correct Sets is Half the Battle Won: This is one of the most important parts of the DILR section. Concentrate on finding and solving the right puzzles, rather than the most difficult ones.
• First Scan: Spend the initial 5-10 minutes of the section looking over all the sets. This "well-spent" time allows you to get an approximate idea about the sequence in which you can try them.
• Start with Comfort: Start off with the set with which you are most comfortable so that you feel confident in the test.
• Be Object in Choice: Don't select a set just because you've had a known topic, as it could be a time snare. Avoid being subjective in your evaluation.
• Recognize When to Release: If you've spent over 15 minutes on a set with no development, it's time to give up. Avoid ego from interfering with your goal to optimize scores.
Accurate Resources and Practice
Consecutive and quality practice forms the backbone of DILR preparation.
• Previous Year Papers: The 5 year's CAT Question Papers (75 tough sets of CAT 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) are a good source of quality DILR puzzles. In particular, the four papers of CAT 2017 and CAT 2018 are regarded as excellent samples.
• Mocks and Sectional Tests: Taking good quality mock tests is crucial for facing high-quality DILR puzzles and fine-tuning your test-taking strategies. Analyze them thoroughly, solving all sets during analysis and honing your question selection skills.
• Allocate Sufficient Time: Make sure to allocate at least an hour for DILR every day. Do not ignore this section in favor of Quants or VARC, as it carries similar weightage.
• Quality over Quantity: Remember, quality matters more than quantity. Finding 200 hours of quality preparation time can lead to a decent percentile.
• No Shortcuts: Shortcuts tend to create the illusion of preparation; avoid them at all costs. Work on preparing from scratch to automate your fundamentals.
The DILR section is not a sprint, but a marathon that will try your temperament. Remain unwavering, keep your eye on putting your practice plan into action, and don't worry if the paper is extremely tough as it's tough for all. You can overcome the DILR challenge and crack the CAT exam with hard work, strategic practice, and the right mindset.
