Engineer vs. Non-Engineer: The Diversity Landscape in Top B-Schools

Body

Is the "Engineering-dominated" classroom a relic of the past, or a current reality? While top-tier Indian B-schools are increasingly prioritizing diversity in their admissions, the data suggests that for many institutions, engineers still hold the majority share of the incoming batch.

ย

  • The Tech-Heavy Hubs: Institutes like DMS IIT Delhi, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta maintain a significantly higher engineering ratio. This often correlates with the specialized nature of the placements and the heavy quantitative rigor in the curriculum.

  • The Balanced Pivot: IIM Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kozhikode, and Indore have shifted toward a more balanced, if not non-engineer-leaning, demographic. This is a deliberate push by admissions committees to foster diverse perspectives in class discussions.

  • Aspirant Strategy: If you are an engineer, your "competition" in terms of pure numbers is highest at the top-tier IIMs. If you are a non-engineer, institutions like IIM Indore or IIM Lucknow might offer a classroom environment that feels more aligned with your diverse academic background.

I think the debate on 'diversity' is missing the point. If you look at the top firms coming to campus, they recruit for skillsets, not just backgrounds. Whether you're an engineer or not, the B-school experience forces you to bridge that gap by the end of the first year anyway

The data for IIM Indore and IIM Lucknow is encouraging. As a Humanities grad, seeing these numbers gives me a lot more confidence when applying. I was worried I'd be surrounded by only coders and software devs

IIM Bangalore still hovering at 73% engineers. Does this mean non-engineers are at a disadvantage during placement preparation there, or is the diversity actually helping everyone learn?
