Final Selection Criteria for IIMs

Body

Each IIM gives different weightage to CAT score, interview, WAT (Written Ability Test), and profile.

For Old IIMs (A, B, C, L, K, I) they consider CAT score + interview performance + profile + sometimes WAT.

  • CAT isn’t everything: They give CAT scores a moderate weight (25–37.5%), so even if you don’t have a 99.8+, you still stand a chance if other parts are strong.

  • Interviews are king: PI carries the heaviest weight (35–50%). How you perform in the interview can literally make or break your chances.

  • WAT adds another filter: Except Indore, most old IIMs still test you on writing (8–20%).

  • Profile matters too: Academics and work experience carry decent weight (10–25%), rewarding consistency and diverse backgrounds.

For Newer IIMs (Shillong, Udaipur, Trichy, Raipur, Ranchi) they lean more on the CAT score, but they also balance it out with profile marks, making the process simpler but still fair.

  • More CAT-focused: CAT scores play a much bigger role (40–60%), so cracking the test gives you a stronger edge here.

  • Interviews matter but slightly less: PI weight is lower (15–40%), so your performance there is important but not as decisive as in old IIMs.

  • Simpler process: Most don’t bother with WAT, so it’s more straightforward.

  • Profile gets good weight: Especially in Raipur and Ranchi (20–35%), so your academics and work-ex still count

For old IIMs Holistic selection → Strong interview + decent CAT + good profile can get you through. For new IIMs consider CAT-heavy selection → High CAT score is your ticket, but a solid profile boosts your chances further.
