CAT2025

Give me a suggestion

Body

I’m 24 and currently preparing for the Assam PCS exam. I completed my BSc in Physics in 2024. Due to financial constraints at home, I’ve taken up an MTS job in PWD (salary ~25k) to support my family. Alongside this, I’m also pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from IGNOU.

Since PCS is uncertain, I’m thinking of preparing for a backup option as well. I’m considering CAT, but I don’t have much clarity about it yet just watched a few YouTube videos.

My strengths are Quant, DI, and Reasoning. However, my biggest weakness is English.

I have a few concerns:

- Is CAT a realistic option for someone in my situation?

- Will my gap (BSc completed in 2024 + current job) be a problem during admissions?

- Can I manage CAT prep alongside a job and PCS preparation?

- If I get a good percentile in quant and DI, and less in English, is it possible to get good college like FAMS or something good college for placement???

I used to hate English too. The trick isn't grammar; it's reading more. Stop watching YouTube videos on 'how to learn English' and just start reading 2 articles a day. By the time CAT rolls around, your subconscious will handle the grammar. Focus on that and your Quant skills will actually take you to the top 1%

Don't try to clear PCS and CAT in the same year. They require different brain 'modes.' PCS needs depth and static knowledge; CAT needs speed and adaptive logic. I’d suggest giving CAT a shot this year; if it doesn't work out, you still have the PCS foundation

our MTS job isn't a 'gap,' it's your story! In the interview, don't just say 'I did file work.' Talk about the processes you improved or the public service aspect of PWD. Admissions committees love candidates who can show resilience while working a day job

Listen, I was in the same boat. I had 99.8 in QA and 99.5 in DILR but 75 in VARC. I didn't get a call from IIM-A. Don't underestimate the sectional cutoff. It’s the gatekeeper. Treat VARC like a separate exam, not just 'something you'll pick up
