How different is the XAT Decision Making section and how should I prepare for it?

Body

I am preparing mainly for CAT, but also planning to take XAT. I have heard the DM section is unique and not similar to any CAT topic. How do people approach this section? Are there good practice resources or past year papers? What kind of logic or mindset should one develop to score well here? Any suggestions???

You're correct, the Decision Making (DM) portion of XAT is much unlike CAT because it's not about math or formulas. It's more about what you would do if you were a rational and responsible manager in actual life.

I think we should not  look for a "trick" response. Rather, pose this question to yourself: If I were a manager, what's the fairest, ethical, and pragmatic thing to do? We should refrain from selfish, illegal, or short-term options.

The optimal preparation can be done only by practicing past XAT papers. These give one a true flavor of DM. As you read a case, immediately name the stakeholders, e.g., employees, customers, company, society. Then see which choice resolves the problem in the fairest and most enduring way.

DM are not just exam question but rather as a mini case study where you must exercise good judgment. With sufficient practice using previous papers, your instincts will strengthen.

It helps to discuss DM questions in study groups. When others explain their logic, you realize there's more than one valid point of view, but you have to pick the most balanced one.

I followed the CATKing DM course and supplemented it with past XAT papers. Also started noting down why options were ruled out-it helped me stay consistent in my reasoning.

initially found DM confusing because it felt like a GK or ethics test, but after doing 20+ caselets, I started seeing patterns. Avoid emotional or biased decisions. Think like a neutral manager.

DM isn't about right or wrong answers-it's about judging situations fairly and logically. I practiced with past 10 years of XAT papers and reviewed my logic behind every option.
