How Do I Start Preparing for NMAT?

Body

First things first: What’s NMAT really like?

  • 3 sections — Language, Quant, Reasoning

  • Each section has 36 questions

  • And here's the catch: ⏱️ Tight timing, no going back, and adaptive difficulty

It's more of a speed game than a brain-cruncher. So if you're not a CAT genius — that’s okay.

Tip 1: Get Your Map Straight

Start with a rough timeline.

  • Got 60 days? Spend:

    • 40 days learning & practicing

    • 10 days reviewing + solving

    • 10 days for mock tests & final polishing

Don’t over-plan. Just start.

Tip 2: Section-wise, what should you study?

Language Skills

  • RCs, Grammar correction, Para jumbles, Vocabulary

  •  Focus on speed and not overthinking

Quantitative Skills

  • Arithmetic = non-negotiable

  • Mix in Algebra, DI, and Geometry basics

  • Shortcuts and estimation will save your life here

Logical Reasoning

  • Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Series

  • Verbal Logic like assumptions, conclusions

  •  Practice is the only way to improve here

 Tip 3: Timing > Talent

You’ll only get 28–52 minutes per section.
No switching. No revisiting.

So when you prep, practice with a timer. It trains your brain to move fast, not perfect.

Tip 4: Mocks Matter (a lot)

Don’t wait to “complete syllabus” before taking mocks.
You’ll never feel 100% ready.

Take a mock every 7-10 days → see what’s working → tweak prep → repeat.

Use the official NMAT mocks — they’re adaptive and super close to the real deal.

Tip 5: Smart Retakes Are a Win

Here’s the truth:
Most toppers don’t get it right on attempt 1.

That’s why NMAT allows 3 attempts.
Plan your first attempt early (October-November), so you have time for 1–2 retakes with better strategy.

Tip 6: Keep It Light

NMAT isn’t CAT. It’s fast, but not evil.
Don’t overcomplicate your prep. Focus on:

  • Fast solving

  • Strong basics

  • Staying calm under the timer

 Tip 7: What’s a good score?

  • NMIMS Mumbai (core) needs 232+

  • NMIMS Bangalore/Hyderabad: 210+

  • Other great colleges via NMAT: 200+

Aim for progress, not perfection. Even 1 focused hour/day over 2 months can get you into NMIMS!
