How to Approach VARC in CAT: It’s Not About Reading More, It’s About Reading Right

Body

One of the biggest mistakes many CAT aspirants make while preparing for the Common Admission Test is assuming that scoring well in the VARC section is purely about reading a lot. In reality, the problem is often reading without truly understanding the passage.

Even candidates who eventually score 99+ percentile don’t solve every Reading Comprehension (RC) question correctly. The key is not perfection it’s selective accuracy and smart decision-making during the exam.

The Reality of CAT VARC

The VARC section is designed to test comprehension, reasoning, and time management. In most cases, the RC section includes a mix of passages with varying difficulty levels.

A common pattern aspirants notice is:

  • Two relatively easier passages

  • Two passages that are longer or conceptually difficult

Trying to solve everything perfectly is rarely the best strategy. Instead, high scorers often focus on identifying the right passages and questions to attempt.

What High Percentilers Do Differently

Many successful candidates approach VARC with a clear strategy:

  1. Choose the right passages first
Instead of attempting passages randomly, quickly scan them and start with the ones that feel more comfortable or familiar in topic and structure.

  2. Focus on core questions
Questions like the main idea, author’s argument, tone, and purpose often rely on understanding the structure of the passage rather than minute details.

  3. Avoid getting stuck on one RC
Spending too much time on a single difficult passage can hurt your overall score. Moving on at the right time is an underrated skill in CAT.

A Note for Consistent High Scorers

If you are someone who already scores 95+ consistently in VARC mocks, you may not need to overcomplicate your strategy.

For such candidates, it often makes sense to trust your instincts and start solving from the first RC itself. The time spent scanning all passages could instead be used to solve two or three additional questions, which can make a meaningful difference in the final score.

Practice the Right Way

Preparation for VARC should always simulate the actual exam environment. A few practical habits can make a big difference:

  • Solve RCs in a timed manner
Try assigning 8-10 minutes per RC and track how efficiently you complete it.

  • Take sectional tests regularly
Writing at least one VARC sectional test every week helps build familiarity with different passage styles.

  • Analyze your mistakes carefully
The real improvement often comes from understanding why you got a question wrong rather than simply solving more passages.

Cracking VARC in CAT is less about reading speed and more about structured thinking, comprehension, and smart question selection. If you can learn to pick the right passages, manage time effectively, and focus on understanding the author’s argument, hitting a high percentile in VARC becomes far more achievable.

I completely agree with the idea of skipping difficult passages. Earlier I used to waste 12-15 minutes on one RC trying to crack it, and that would mess up the rest of the section.

This is a really good reminder that accuracy matters more than attempting everything. A lot of aspirants feel pressured to solve all RCs, but focusing on the right passages can make a huge difference in the final percentile.
