How to prepare for XAT as a non-engineer?

Body

Hey everyone!

I am a non-engineer and planning to appear for XAT. I have heard it's quite different from CAT, especially the Decision Making and GK sections. Can anyone please share some tips on how a non-engineer like me should prepare for XAT? How should I approach Decision Making, and what should I do for Quant and GK? Any resources or strategies would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

  • I attempted XAT last year and realized it's more about thinking than just solving. DM is something you can’t ‘mug up’, so practice is the only way. Read the case, list stakeholders, and consider consequences, that helped me. VARC can be tough because of vocabulary-based questions, so I started reading tougher texts (The Guardian, Aeon essays). GK helped me in final merit, so do not take it lightly. I followed Manorama Yearbook and The Hindu Review monthly. Focus on your strengths, that’s the XAT strategy.

  • I found XAT more favorable than CAT as a non-engineer because Decision Making levels the playing field. I used materials from Career Launcher and practiced 2-3 DM sets daily. For Verbal Ability, I focused on reading comprehension, para-completion, and poem-based RCs (yes, they can show up in XAT!). I wasn't great at Quant, but XAT's Quant is not too tricky if you're solid with basics. Do not stress too much about GK, just revise static and current affairs in the last month.

I was nervous about Quant but stuck to arithmetic, percentages, and algebra from basic sources. I didn’t try to master every chapter, just focused on important and frequently asked topics. DM was tricky in the beginning but improved with regular practice. Try not to use CAT logic in XAT’s DM, it’s not about speed or elimination but ethical and balanced decisions. For GK, I made flashcards for static facts and revised them weekly. Also, don’t forget to practice essay writing if XAT keeps it this year.

Coming from a humanities background, VARC and DM were my strengths. For Decision Making, I treated it like case study reading stay neutral, avoid emotional decisions, and think like a manager. I watched some YouTube videos that explained how XAT frames ethical dilemmas. For GK, I started collecting monthly PDFs and followed government schemes, business news, and global events. My tip, don’t ignore mocks, I took a mock every 10 days and analyzed my weak sections.

As a non-engineer, I focused heavily on Decision Making (DM) because it is unique to XAT and not very math heavy. I practiced previous year DM sets daily, after a few weeks, I started spotting patterns in the right kind of logic they expect. Also, for GK, I created a daily habit of reading current affairs from sources like AffairsCloud and Business Standard. I ignored Quant at first but later realized basic arithmetic and algebra are still very important. Start early and practice in time-bound settings.
