IIM Calcutta PI Experience 2026: BBA Fresher, Startup Story, Marketing Concepts & Chess Questions

Body

LOCATION- IIM CALCATTA MDC

21st Feb 2026 Afternoon Slot

1 Male(38) 1 Female(28)

Me- May i come in sir

M1- Absolutely that’s why i am holding the door for you(Laughing)

Me- It’s because of the courtesy

M1- Are very good very good

Me- May I sit

M1- Ya sure you may

Me- How are you sir, How are you maam

Both- We are good….

M1- I am glad you asked..

M1- So you are from LPU(Because my certificate holder has LPU printed in it)

Me- Yes sir…

M1- So you have done BBA…tell me the subjects which you liked in this course…

Me- At the time when i was pursuing the interview i was not very much inclined towards what is being taught to me and the reason would be how it is being taught by my mentors, but later on i understood and inculcate the subjects that why it is being taught by that i would say Economics in which PED Concept, Production Possibility curve, PPC…In marketing i would say 4Ps and 7Ps marketing mix, AIDA, PDCA framework, Mashlow’s hierarchy concept…as well as tourism because i want to explore the world and see the nuances as i was not exposed to tourism because of lower economic strata…

M1- (Interrupted in between while i was explaining) Tell me one subject which you liked the most…

Me:- As of now i enjoy every subject because i like to gain information and see where it applies in real life…but a very specific subject would be marketing as it was something my startup in social media marketing was based upon…

M1 and F1- (Surprised):- You had a startup but it is not mentioned here…

Me:- The reason is i donot have GST and/or partnership deed to show as it was the main requirement of CAP…

F1- Why didn’t you registered for the GST..

Me- I actually had a very little fund when i was getting involved in this startup and mostly focused on fullfilling the equipments required in my startup…my first equipment was Iphone which i bought in EMI with mere 3000 per month…after that i was so much indulged in those activities i didn’t got much time to get GST…Second reason is GST requires a location…it could be own property or Rent agreement but i started my startup from a tea stall…

F1- (Laughing) You are a good story teller…so why you thought of this entrepreneurial journey…

Me:- I actually saw a gap in the market where top tier local sector business whose turnover are over 50 lakhs-1Crore could afford the Social Media fees which could be ranging from 60,000-1,00,000 per year but small business owners whose turnover is under 20 lakhs or 40 lakhs could not afford to pay this amount and relatively lack in social media sector…now i gave the same services but in monthly basis which started from around 4000 till 12000… per month…and now my clientele reached over 50 businesses…

M1- (suprisingly) 50…nice nice…so happy to see that despite of low funding you actually did something in this…

M1- Tell a story where you faced a challenge while approaching a client and how you handled it…

Me- i told about how early success in my startup actually restricted me from learning new things…because i got my first client within 18 days of my startup with a ticket size of 12,000 but later when i went to approach a client in the education sector…the client was satisfied abd wanted to buy my service with a ticket size of 13,000 but he wanted the service after 3 months…but for now he asked me about SEO which didn’t had any knowledge at that time but i straightforward told the client that we can do it for 9,999 but for you we can do it for 7,999 because i knew if i outsource seo it would cost 5000 only…later the client hesitated and said it is out of my budget then i opened calculator and acted as i was calculating something very serious but i was just playing with the calci…then i told them that the best we can do is 6,200 and the client agreed on the deal…so i got 13000 deal plus 1200 as profit for being a mediator…

(Both the panels were very satisfied and clapped for me…)

M1-Explain mashlow hierarchy to a 10 year old child…

Me:- can i use the word beta…

M1- Yeah sure…

Me:- So beta Mashlow hierarchy is something that is related to your needs wants and desire…suppose your are going to the mela the very first thing you want is fast food…that is you psychological need…now you got the food but in a ground plenty of people you feel unsafe, the very next thing you will do is hold the hands of your parent tightly…thats security…now in the mela you will then see how is your parent handling the chaos in the mela and your are worried for them…thats called care for love beings…after that you will try to not make any nuisance so that your parents would not scold you…thats called self respect and after all these things you will see a dog searching for food and by the caring nature you are having with you…you gave food to them…thats called self actualization

M1- Very good very good….

F1- Any recent news that you thought it could hinder your business…

Told about invideo AI but it was an year old news…

F1- That is a year old news tell me something that happened recently…

Told about the data centers being established by reliance and adani…

F1- Tell me about what is being discussed in our budget regarding data centre

Told them about 10,000 crore is being injected in the AI sector but in my opinion it is not a sustainable choice and the right time to have data centres in India although i agree with the fact that data centres are important but as of now we have to effectively and efficiently observe the pros and cons of that…

F1- so you participated in chess…what is en passant?

Told about the rule which is being used to counter the advantage if you move pawn to two square when the opponent can capture your piece…

F1- What is shannon number?

10^120…more moves than the total stars present in the observable universe

F1- What is the probability of moving a piece in the very start of the game

1/10

F1- Its 1/8 you are wrong…

Me: No maam its 1/10 because knights can also move without any blockage..

F1- D4

Me- E4

F1- Qh5

Me- Kf6

F1- Very good…

Panel clapping in the middle of the interview is the plot twist I didn’t expect. Bro turned the interview into a Shark Tank pitch.

Explaining Maslow’s hierarchy using a mela example for a 10 year old was actually genius. That’s probably the most relatable version of Maslow I’ve heard.

Starting a startup from a tea stall and negotiating deals using a calculator acting trick… that’s peak jugaad entrepreneurship😄Honestly more interesting than half the case studies i read.

Really interesting interview experience. One thing I’m curious about how did you prepare for the current affairs and chess related questions? Did they come from your profile form or was it completely random?
