Is an MBA actually worth it in 2026… or is it the biggest career trap nobody talks about?

Body

I’ve noticed EVERYONE around me considering an MBA as a “reset button.” Stuck jobs, low pay, career confusion suddenly the answer seems to be: “Do an MBA.”

  • Cost vs Payoff: India: ₹20-30L, Abroad: ₹60-80L +1-2 years out of work. Average salary? Often ₹18-25L. Break-even can take 6-10 years.

  • Clarity > Degree: Most people don’t lack a degree, they lack direction. MBA won’t fix that.

  • MBA Works If: You know your target role, required skills, industry, and have a clear plan. Otherwise, it’s a costly detour.

  • The Takeaway: MBA is NOT a trap confusion is. Use it to accelerate a path you already chose, not to escape uncertainty.

so i just want to know was your MBA worth it? Did it actually change your career? What would you tell your pre-MBA self?

Honestly, the MBA hype online is either over-praising or demonizing. This is the most realistic take I’ve seen

I realized halfway through my MBA that I didn’t have a clear post-MBA goal, and honestly, it cost me more time than I expected

I’d never do an MBA again without knowing the exact role and skills I wanted to gain. The financials alone are enough to make you think twice
