"No Networking Allowed" The bizarre reality of IIM admission guardrails.

Body

The administration has officially warned incoming students that contacting seniors via LinkedIn or other platforms regarding placements, campus life, or academics is 'strictly prohibited' until the official guardrails are lifted. They’ve even threatened to escalate violations to the Admissions Office.

I get that seniors need space, but is a total ban on networking actually helpful, or is it just an unnecessary culture of fear? Most of us view B-school as an opportunity to build networks, but this policy seems to actively work against that.

What do you guys think? Is this standard procedure to prevent 'spamming,' or is this an overreach by the admin?"

Welcome to the 'Corporate' simulation. If you can’t handle a 'don't message' email, you aren't going to like the actual hierarchy you'll face in the industry. It's a taste of what it's like when you have to follow protocol

I’ve seen this happen at other IIMs too. It usually starts because a few juniors get creepy or start asking the same 5 questions about 'is placement data real?' to every senior they find. The admin creates these rules because a minority ruins it for everyone.

This is exactly why people are confused after 12th/Graduation. You’re told 'network is your net worth' for years, and the moment you try to connect, you get a formal warning. It’s a massive double standard

Escalating to the Admissions Office for sending a LinkedIn message? That’s wild. This is supposed to be a professional environment, yet they’re treating students like middle schoolers. So much for the 'leadership' experience

It sounds harsh, but honestly? If 500 juniors message every senior at once, it becomes noise. Seniors are busy with summer internships and final placements. There has to be a channel, but maybe a total ban is too extreme.
