Sectional vs Full Length Mocks: When to Take What for OMETs

Body

Mocks are the backbone of OMET preparation (XAT, IIFT, NMAT, SNAP, MICAT, etc.), but many aspirants struggle with how to schedule them effectively. Should you start with sectional mocks, jump straight into full length ones, or mix both?

Understanding the Two Types of Mocks

🔹 Sectional Mocks

  • Focus on one section at a time: Quant, VARC, DILR, Decision Making, or GK.

  • Time: 30 to 60 minutes per section (depending on the exam).

  • Purpose: Build topic specific strengths, understand tricky concepts, and improve speed in weak areas.

🔹 Full Length Mocks

  • Simulate the actual exam environment: all sections, exact time, and order.

  • Time: 2 to 3 hours (XAT/IIFT), 1 to 1.5 hours (SNAP/NMAT).

  • Purpose: Test stamina, strategy, and time management across sections.

When to Take Sectional Mocks

  1. Early Prep Stage (3 to 4 months before exam)

  • Focus on weak sections.

  • Practice specific question types repeatedly.

  • Topic Mastery

    • If you struggle with Decision Making, DI, or GK, do sectional mocks daily/alternate days.

  • Concept Reinforcement

    • Helps identify mistakes without wasting time on full length tests.

When to Take Full Length Mocks

    1. Mid to Late Prep Stage (1 to 2 months before exam)

    • Begin integrating all sections to simulate exam conditions.

  • Time Management & Strategy

    • Learn sectional order, pacing, and breaks.

  • Stress Handling

    • Helps build mental endurance for 2 to 3 hour exams like XAT/IIFT.

  • Final Revision

    • 2 to 3 full length mocks per week in the last month to fine-tune approach.

    Combining Both

    • Start with sectional mocks to strengthen weak areas.

    • Gradually shift to full-length mocks to develop exam temperament.

    • Continue sectional practice even during full length phase, especially for high weightage or tricky sections (DM, GK, DILR).

    Key Takeaways

    1. Early prep take sectional mocks  and learn concepts & speed

    2. Mid late prep take full-length mocks and build stamina & strategy

    3. Analyze every mock thoroughly bcz just giving mocks without analysis is wasted effort.

    4. Adjust number of mocks per exam: XAT/IIFT (10 to 15), NMAT (10 to 12), SNAP (8 to 10).
