The Engineering Stronghold is Cracking: IIM Lucknow’s 49% Non-Engineer Batch is a Game Changer

Body

The latest batch profile from Indian Institute of Management Lucknow showing 49.3% non-engineering students reflects an interesting shift that many aspirants have been noticing over the past few years.

One possible reason is the diversity points used in IIM selection criteria, where candidates from non-engineering backgrounds receive additional weightage during the shortlisting process. This was originally introduced to bring more academic diversity into MBA classrooms, which were historically dominated by engineers.

Another factor could be the changing preparation landscape. Over time, more students from commerce, economics, humanities, and other non-technical fields have started preparing seriously for the Common Admission Test. With better access to preparation resources and awareness about MBA careers, the applicant pool itself has become more diverse.

In many ways, this shift can be healthy for management education. A classroom with varied academic backgrounds often leads to richer discussions, broader perspectives, and more balanced problem-solving approaches, which is exactly what management programs aim to encourage.

People often complain about diversity weightage being 'unfair' to engineers, but have you ever been in a room where 60 people solve a marketing case using the same engineering logic? It doesn't work. We need the historians, the economists, and the designers to look at the 'human' side of business. IIML is leading the way here

Almost hitting 50% non-engineers at a place like HelL (IIM Lucknow) is honestly mind-blowing. I remember when anything above 20% was considered a huge deal. It’s great to see the 'diversity points' actually working to level the playing field for BBA, B.Com, and Arts grads. The classroom discussions must be so much more interesting now
