The MBA Reality Check: It’s More Than Just a Percentile

Body

  1. 6 in profile is not the end of MBA Journey, FMS, IIFT, MDI, XLRI there are enough tier 1 b schools where you can make it.

  2. Not getting into IIM BLACKI, is not end of your career, and BLACKI is no guarantee to success as well. Probability of being successful changes a lot.

  3. This exam is unpredictable, just because you didn't score well doesn't mean you are useless or you didn’t work hard, luck & mental calmness plays far more important role than one can imagine.

  4. Gap is a -ve, but many with 3-4-5 years gap convert tier 1 and many tier 2 and 1.5 are very much convertible with gap years, doesn't mean you take gap if you can have a job. Doesn't mean gap is end of the road.

  5. Too many variables in the process, Exam has no syllabus boundary, Composite score are not openly disclosed by all b schools, especially private ones, CAT score is major component but not the only component, Personal Interviews are Random and no one knows anything post interview.

  6. And past acads are worthy criteria? Maybe yes, maybe no, but you can’t just tell people who did well throughout their life in school that your marks have no value, so 10th 12th and UG marks have to have some value, but Process should be more holistic, Certifications, Internships, Live projects, Research work, Entrepreneurship should also be awarded.

Guys life is always more than just an MBA, there are multiple channels to be successful, look at things outside MBA.

Why the Journey is Still Worth It

While the process is tough, it’s also a unique catalyst for growth. Use this time to:

  • Build Resilience: The discipline required to study for these exams under pressure is a skill that will serve you for decades, regardless of your ultimate career path.

  • Discover Your "Why": This process forces you to articulate who you are and what you want to achieve. That clarity is a massive competitive advantage, even if you pivot away from an MBA later.

  • Create Your Own Luck: Instead of fearing the "random" interview process, focus on what you can control: the depth of your knowledge, your ability to tell your story, and the projects that showcase your initiative.

  • Expand Your Horizons: The beauty of looking outside the MBA is realizing that the business acumen you're building is universally applicable. Whether you end up in a startup, a corporate, or your own venture, the analytical framework you’ve learned is yours to keep.

I love that you mentioned holistic growth. My best interview answers came from a side project I did, not from my test scores. That’s what actually caught their attention

The most successful people I know in the corporate world didn't all go to IIM-A. They just stayed curious and kept building. That curiosity is worth more than any tag
