The myths of CAT and preparing for it !!

Body

Preparing for CAT can be overwhelming with all the advice floating around some helpful, some downright misleading. Let’s clear up the biggest myths and see who really benefits from them.

Myth 1: CAT is impossible without years of coaching

Many believe that cracking CAT requires long-term coaching. The truth? CAT is primarily an aptitude test. If you have a decent grasp of Maths and English, you can target 95+ percentile through self-study with some guidance. Who benefits from spreading this myth? Coaching institutes a ₹900 crore industry who want you to sign up for 11 months of classes.

Myth 2: A low mock score today means failure tomorrow

Getting 0 in a mock test is not the end of the road but it’s also not realistic to think you can jump straight to 99 percentile overnight. If you can’t attempt at least 5 questions per section (roughly 40% accuracy), cracking top IIMs will be extremely challenging. Beware of YouTube gurus and online forums that paint miracles your results depend on aptitude and consistent practice, not luck.

Myth 3: Only top 10 colleges matter

While top 10 colleges can give you a great starting point, they don’t guarantee success. Many MBA graduates from IITs and tier-2 colleges are thriving because they focused on learning, performance, and skill-building, not just the brand name. Your career is ultimately shaped by what you do after MBA, not just where you studied.

CAT preparation is as much about mindset as it is about numbers and words. Stay positive, focused, and strategic. Fear, jealousy, or anxiety won’t help you grow through practice, reflection, and smart preparation. If you aim for the top 10 colleges, guidance helps, but your aptitude and consistency are what will ultimately get you there.
