The Reality of IIM Seats: Understanding Category-Wise Competition

Body

MBA aspirants often focus solely on their CAT percentile, but understanding the actual seat matrix is critical for a realistic strategy. All 21 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) follow a centralized reservation policy mandated by the Government of India.

This policy allocates seats as follows: 27% for NC-OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 10% for EWS, and a 5% horizontal reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD). Consequently, only about 40.5% of the total flagship PGP/MBA seats are available under the General (Open) category. Recognizing this distribution helps candidates set meaningful percentile targets tailored to their specific category, as each IIM maintains separate merit lists for each group.

Does the 5% PwD reservation apply to every single program, or is it only for the flagship PGP?

It's a horizontal reservation, meaning it cuts across all categories. Itโ€™s applied consistently across the flagship programs to ensure inclusive representation.

Exactly. Itโ€™s not just about the competition level; itโ€™s about understanding the specific โ€œbucketโ€ youโ€™re competing in. Data-backed planning is the only way to stay sane during prep.

: I never realized that General category seats were effectively less than half of the total intake. It really puts the 99+ percentile requirement for top IIMs into perspective
