The "Seats vs. Aspirants" Reality: A Snapshot of Top B-Schools

Body

capacity of top-tier institutes is the first step toward a realistic CAT/XAT strategy. While the total pool of MBA seats across all 21 IIMs has reached approximately 7,700, the "Elite Tier" is much, much smaller.

It is easy to get lost in the "Percentile" race, but the seat count is the true denominator. When you realize that the total intake for the "Top 10" is only a few thousand, you understand why competition is so fierce. This isn't meant to discourage you; it’s meant to help you build a diversified target list. Don’t just aim for one institute—map your profile to the ones that actually have the capacity to absorb your background.

Everyone looks at the 'total' seats, but if you look at the category-wise distribution, the 'General' open seats are even fewer. This is why every single mark in the CAT exam matters the margin for error is non-existent.

The intake for IIM Lucknow being the highest is often ignored in these discussions. It makes it one of the most 'reachable' among the top-tier IIMs compared to the super-exclusive batches at A, B, or C

Looking at these numbers, it’s wild how much pressure is on the top 5,000 seats when there are lakhs of applicants. It really makes you realize why having a 'Plan B' (and C, and D) isn't just smart it's necessary
