Should You Apply to One MBA Exam or All of Them?

Apply to more than one. Between CAT, XAT, SNAP and NMAT, only about 20 to 30% is different from exam to exam. All the major exams are Arithmetic and Algebra heavy, which means that if you have done those two topics well, you can give all the exams. You only need to add what is specific to each.

How Do CAT, XAT, SNAP, NMAT and CMAT Compare?

Exam

Type

What Stands Out

CAT

Intelligence-based

Reading Comprehension is an important section

XAT

Intelligence-based

GK appears but is not counted. Vocabulary is asked

SNAP

Speed-based

60 minutes, 60 questions. No RC. Grammar and Vocabulary asked. 3 attempts

NMAT

Speed-based

2 hours. Adaptive pattern, like GMAT. Vocabulary asked

CMAT

Speed-based

GK is counted. Innovation and Entrepreneurship is counted

What Are Intelligence-Based and Speed-Based MBA Exams?

CATKing divides the exams into two groups, so that you know how to prepare for each.

Group

Exams

Who Should Attempt

Intelligence-based (preparation-based)

CAT and XAT

Those who have prepared well. CAT is a level above, and a random attempt will not work

Speed-based

SNAP, NMAT and CMAT

Those who can move fast through questions

Why are CAT and XAT called intelligence-based exams?

CAT and XAT should be attempted by those who have prepared well. CAT has a higher level, so walking in without preparation will not give you the result.

Why are SNAP and NMAT called speed-based exams?

  • SNAP: 60 minutes and 60 questions. You move through the paper quickly. It has no Reading Comprehension, and asks Grammar and Vocabulary instead.

  • NMAT: about 2 hours of fast execution, and the pattern keeps changing as you answer.

  • CMAT: also a speed-based exam.

How Does the NMAT Adaptive Pattern Work?

NMAT is adaptive, like GMAT. If you answer the first question correctly, the next question will be harder. If you answer that correctly too, the level rises again. The level goes up question by question, and the design is meant to avoid frustrating the candidate. CATKing considers this a very good way to test candidates.

What Differs in the Remaining 20 to 30%?

Area

What to Know
