CAT 2025 Percentile vs Rank: The Reality of 2.58 Lakh Aspirants

Body

The CAT 2025 results, managed by IIM Kozhikode, have officially set the benchmark for the upcoming MBA admissions cycle. With 2.58 lakh actual test-takers (out of 2.95 lakh registered candidates), the competition has intensified, making the "Percentile vs Rank" mapping more critical than ever for IIM shortlists.

A 99 percentile may sound like the finish line, but in a pool of 2.58 lakh students, it means there are still roughly 2,580 candidates ranked above you. For those aiming for the "Elite" bracket (99.9+ percentile), the margin for error was razor-thin, with only 258 students making the cut.

At The MBA Geek, we’ve analyzed the data to provide a tier-based breakdown of where you stand:

  • Elite (99.9%ile): Only 258 students. Guaranteed calls from BLACKI IIMs.

  • Old IIM Bracket (97-99%ile): Top 3%. This is the threshold for most "Old" IIM interview calls.

  • New IIM/CAP (95%ile): Top 12,900 students. Competitive for New and Baby IIMs.

  • Tier 2/Entry (80-90%ile): Top 10-20%. Strong territory for top private institutes and niche specialized programs.

Only about 10,000 students (the top 3.9%) successfully secure interview calls from any IIM. If you find yourself in the "Common" or "Entry" tiers, focusing on ROI-centric private colleges or preparing for OMETs becomes the strategic next step. Visit The MBA Geek for the full breakdown of individual IIM selection weights and placement reality checks.

Only 12 people got a 100 percentile? Last year I thought it was higher. The paper must have been significantly tougher this time

It’s actually consistent with the 2.58L turnout. The normalization across slots was brutal this year, especially in DILR. If you’re at 99.5+, you’re essentially in the same talent pool as the 100 percentilers; it just comes down to the interview now.

I’m sitting at 97.2 percentile with a non-engineer background. The MBA Geek chart says "Old IIM" territory, but my grads are 7/7/8. Do I actually have a shot at K or I?

Honestly, K is very profile-heavy. With 7/7/8, you’d need a much higher CAT score to compensate for the academic points. Check the specific weightage for "Diversity" on the blog; that might be your saving grace.

This 99%ile rank is a wake-up call. 2,500 people ahead of me feels like a lot when seats are so limited.
