Engineers vs. Non-Engineers batch Composition of Top B-Schools.

Body

The age-old debate in Indian management education revolves around the dominance of engineers in top B-school cohorts. For years, the narrative has been that top IIMs are "factories for engineers." However, looking at the current batch composition data for schools like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Kozhikode, and FMS reveals a more nuanced picture.

While schools like IIM Bangalore and FMS still show a higher concentration of engineers (hovering around 68-73%), others are clearly making a concerted effort to push toward a 50/50 split.

Why does this matter for your application?

  • The "Diversity" Edge: If you are a non-engineer, you aren't just competing for seats; you are adding value to the classroom. Admissions committees are increasingly looking for diversity to enrich case study discussions.

  • The "Quant" Pressure: Conversely, for engineers, the high concentration means the bar for quantitative aptitude is set incredibly high. You aren't just competing against the general pool; you are competing against the best of the best in your own cohort.

  • The Shift: As B-schools evolve to reflect modern corporate needs (ESG, creative strategy, consumer behavior), the influx of non-engineers is only set to increase.

Ultimately, while the numbers give you a glimpse of the "flavor" of the campus, your individual profile, unique work-ex, and extracurriculars remain the deciding factors.

I’m curious, do these colleges provide separate stats for 'Work-Ex' engineers vs. 'Fresher' engineers? A fresher engineer and a non-engineer with 3 years of marketing experience are two very different competitors

Is the high engineer percentage at places like IIM Bangalore a reflection of the 'brand' attracting engineers, or is it a deliberate admissions strategy? Would love to hear thoughts from seniors on campus

As a non-engineer, I feel like the 'diversity' tag is a double-edged sword. It helps with the call, but you have to work twice as hard to prove your quant capabilities once you're on campus.

FMS at 68% engineers—that’s a high number for a college that prides itself on being the 'People’s MBA

The data for IIM A is interesting a perfect 50/50 split. Does this actually translate to the classroom experience, or do the engineers still end up dominating the quant-heavy electives
