Exam Boycott at IIM Nagpur: Discipline vs Dialogue?

Body

The situation at Indian Institute of Management Nagpur raises an interesting question about how discipline should work in management schools. While institutes need rules to maintain order, banning students from exams can have serious academic consequences. Since MBA students are adults preparing for leadership roles, many might argue that dialogue or proportional penalties could be more effective than academic exclusion. At the same time, institutions must ensure policies are respected.

What do you think was boycotting exams the right way for students to respond, or should situations like this be handled differently?

From the institute’s perspective, I can understand the strict action. If something had gone wrong with a student during the situation, the responsibility would ultimately fall on the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur administration. Sometimes institutions enforce strict rules not just for discipline but also to protect students and themselves from larger consequences.

Management schools are supposed to teach negotiation, dialogue, and conflict resolution. If a situation escalates to exam bans and boycotts, it suggests that communication between students and administration probably broke down somewhere.

At the same time, banning students from exams feels like a very extreme step. For MBA students at Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, missing an exam can affect placements and academic progress. A warning or academic penalty might have been more proportional.
