Mastering Reading Comprehension: 6 Essential Sources for CAT & Beyond

Body

Building the mental stamina required for CAT-level Reading Comprehension (RC) is not about mindless reading; it is about deliberate practice with high-quality, dense material. To excel, you must diversify your reading habits to include topics ranging from existential philosophy to complex global economic policy. These six sources are curated to mirror the vocabulary, tone, and logical density of the passages you will encounter on exam day.

Reading is only half the battle. To truly improve comprehension, adopt an active engagement strategy:

  1. The 20-Minute Sprint: Dedicate 20 minutes daily to reading one long-form essay from Aeon or AL Daily. Focus on identifying the author’s tone and the underlying structure of the argument before checking the conclusion.

  2. Paraphrase and Summarize: After reading an editorial in The Hindu or an opinion piece in The Guardian, pause and summarize the central thesis in two sentences. If you cannot do this, you haven't fully processed the logic.

  3. Vocabulary in Context: Do not just maintain a word list. When you encounter unfamiliar terms in Project Syndicate or Smithsonian, analyze how the word’s placement contributes to the author’s intent.

  4. Simulate Exam Stress: Occasionally, time your reading. Aim to absorb 600 words of dense, intellectual content in under five minutes to build the necessary speed for CAT-style pressure.

I’ve started doing 20 minutes of active reading every morning, and my speed has definitely increased over the last month.

AL Daily is essentially the holy grail for CAT aspirants. If you can handle the complexity there, the exam passages feel much more manageable

The Hindu is great for building the initial habit, but don't stop there. Moving to Project Syndicate really helped me bridge the gap to those tougher economic passages

Aeon is a game-changer! It really forces you to move past surface-level reading and get into the author's head
