Qualifying vs. Actual Call Cut-offs for Top IIMs

Body

For any CAT aspirant, the most confusing part of the process is seeing a "95 percentile" cut-off on an IIM website and then hearing that people with 99.5 didn't get a call. This is the difference between the Qualifying Cut-off (your ticket to be considered) and the Actual Call Percentile (the score that actually gets you an interview).

The "A-B-C" Reality Check

While the qualifying scores for IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta seem accessible, the actual "Call" percentiles remain some of the highest in the world. For a General category candidate, even a 99.5 doesn't guarantee a call if the academic profile (10th/12th/Grad) isn't top-tier.

  • IIM Ahmedabad: Recently increased its qualifying bar to 95 percentile. However, for a "pure" call, the actual threshold is often 99.7+ for engineers.

IIM Bangalore: Unique because it weights CAT at only 55% for the first shortlist, placing huge emphasis on Work Experience and 10th/12th marks. Someone with a 95 can get a call if they have 3 years of work-ex at a top firm, while a fresher might fail at 99.8.
  • IIM Calcutta: The "Quant Lover’s Paradise." Traditionally, if you have a massive CAT score (99.8+), they are more likely to overlook slightly lower academic grades compared to A or B.

IIM Calcutta is probably the only one left among the big three that truly rewards a high CAT score over 10th/12th marks. If your past is a bit shaky but you kill the CAT, C is your best bet

Wait, IIM Indore’s sectional is 80 across the board for General? That’s tougher than Ahmedabad in a way. One bad day in DILR and your 99.5 total means nothing to them.

The relaxation for SC/ST is significant, but look at the sectional cut-offs! You still need a balanced score. You can't get a 99 in QA and a 40 in VARC and expect an IIM A call, even with a category tag

"IIM Bangalore is the biggest wild card. I've seen a 99.9 GEM get rejected for a call while a 96 percentile non-engineer with 4 years of consulting experience got in. Build your profile, don't just solve mocks!

Aspirants need to stop looking at the qualifying 85. That's just a filter to remove the non-serious candidates. For the top 3, if you're General and an Engineer (GEM), don't expect anything below 99.8. Non-engineers might see some love at 98.5+
