The IIM Final Selection Blueprint: Why Your CAT Score is Only Half the Battle

Body

The path to an IIM isn't a straight line—it’s a balancing act. Analysis of the latest selection criteria reveals a massive shift toward holistic evaluation. While many believe a 99+ percentile guarantees a seat, the data tells a different story.

For the "Holy Trinity" (IIM A, B, and C), the CAT score often accounts for only 25–30% of the final verdict. The real heavy lifters are the Personal Interview (PI), often weighing in at a staggering 40–50%, and the Academic Profile.

Conversely, newer and "Baby" IIMs like IIM Ranchi and IIM Mumbai place a much higher premium on the entrance score (up to 65%). This creates two distinct strategies for candidates: those with "spiky" profiles should target the old IIMs, while high-scorers with average academics have a stronger shot at the newer institutes. Essentially, the "Blacki" IIMs are looking for leaders and communicators, while the newer fleet still prioritizes raw aptitude.

IIM Mumbai 60% weightage for CAT. If you’re a pure 'quant' person, this is officially your top target.

This is huge for people with average CAT scores. Seeing IIM Kozhikode at 35% for Interview + 20% for WAT means you can really pull through if you speak well.

Wait, IIM Sirmaur has a 45% weightage for Profile? Time to start buffing up my LinkedIn and certifications before the season starts
