The "Phantom" Competition: CAT 2025 Stats Decoded

Body

The biggest secret of the CAT exam is the 12% No-Show Rate. In 2025, while 2.95 lakh people paid the registration fee, only 2.58 lakh actually walked into the exam center. That’s 37,000 people who opted out before the first question even appeared

ctually, it’s the opposite. Usually, the people who don't show up are the ones who weren't prepared. This means the "Appeared" pool is actually more competitive/skilled on average.

The 37,000 people who didn't show up are my heroes. They literally lowered the denominator for our percentile calculation without us doing anything.

Must be nice. For the 1.68 lakh General candidates, it’s still a bloodbath. You basically need a 99+ to even get a sniff of the BLACKI IIMs.

Wait, so only 5,700 ST candidates appeared? Given the number of reserved seats across 21 IIMs, the conversion ratio for some categories is actually very high if you just clear the sectional cutoffs
