The Role of the IIM Tag Over Time

Body

The Reality Check: 15–20 Years Out

  • The "Diminishing Returns" Factor: In the first 3–5 years of your career, the tag is a powerful "fast-pass." It opens doors, gets your resume filtered to the top, and provides an immediate network. However, as you move toward the 15–20 year mark, your professional pedigree what you have actually delivered in your previous roles completely eclipses your alma mater. You become defined by your "last job," not your degree.

  • The Social Currency: While its professional relevance may fade in a high-performance corporate environment, the "social status" associated with the IIM tag especially for the legacy institutions (like IIMA, B, C) remains a potent force in Indian social circles. If the goal is "status," the tag holds its value far longer than it does in a boardroom.

  • The Differentiation Challenge: As the number of IIMs increases, the brand has diluted. In 20 years, a recruiter or business partner will likely differentiate heavily between the "legacy" IIMs and the newer/baby IIMs. The degree alone won't be a "get out of jail free" card; your track record will be the final judge.

The "Power" Equation

You noted that Money + Status = Power. An IIM tag provides a head start on this formula, but it is not a perpetual engine for it.

  • Early Career: The tag creates status, which helps generate money.

  • Mid-to-Late Career: You must generate your own status through leadership and industry impact. If you rely solely on the tag after 15 years, you will likely find yourself plateauing while those who continuously built "in-disposable" skills pull ahead.

At 20 years, people aren't asking where you did your MBA; they are asking what industries you’ve disrupted or led

If you want to start a business, the tag helps in initial investor pitches because it signals 'low risk' to them. Beyond that, it’s all about the product

The IIM tag is a great 'filter,' but it's not a 'finish line.' You still have to hustle just as hard as everyone else once you're on the job

College only matters for your first or second job. After that, your performance, soft skills, and domain knowledge are the only things that define your growth
