The section feels syllabus-less until you notice the same three topics showing up in paper after paper.
Ask any CAT aspirant which section scares them most and DILR usually wins by a wide margin. Quant has a syllabus you can outline on paper. VARC has a fixed set of question types. DILR feels like it can throw anything at you, and that unpredictability is exactly what makes people freeze instead of practice.
A CATking DILR strategy session breaks that fear down into something far more concrete: DILR sets fall into two broad buckets, and one specific group of "new-age" topics shows up in the paper far more consistently than students assume.
The two buckets
The first bucket is number-crunching, the calculation-heavy sets built around pie charts, line graphs, tables, and spider charts. These reward speed and clean arithmetic more than clever reasoning. The second bucket is case sets, which combine logical reasoning with data interpretation, plus single arrangement puzzles thrown into the mix.
Here's the part that trips people up: these two buckets have stopped being cleanly separate. The paper setters increasingly merge them into what get called caselets, sets that ask you to reason your way through a logic puzzle and crunch numbers at the same time. There's no black-and-white line anymore between "this is a DI set" and "this is an LR set." Most modern CAT DILR sets live somewhere in between.
The three topics worth memorizing
Beyond those two buckets sits a bigger, more specific category: new-age problems. Three types dominate it, scheduling problems, routes and networks, and games and tournaments. According to the strategy laid out in this session, if you go back through the last five years of CAT papers, every single slot has included at least one of these three. Get lucky, and you'll find all three stacked into the same paper. Get unlucky, and you'll still find at least one.
That's not a small detail. It means a huge c*unk of the "unpredictability" people associate with DILR is actually predictable, provided you've specifically trained on these three topics rather than treating DILR prep as a vague grab-bag of practice sets.
The suggested approach is straightforward: pick up a book, start specifically with scheduling problems, and work through them properly before moving on. Then put together a systematic run through old CAT papers, ideally with a playlist on and enough time blocked out to actually sit with each set rather than skim it.
