TISS vs. XLRI: The Ultimate HR Placement Battle (Batch 2024-26)

Body

If you are aiming for a career in Human Resources, these two names are the pinnacle. However, the experience, the investment, and the outcomes differ significantly between the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai and XLRI Jamshedpur.

TISS Mumbai is essentially "debt-free" luxury. With a fee of around ₹2 lakhs and an average package of ₹28.69 LPA, your ROI ratio is roughly 14:1. At XLRI, while the packages are slightly higher, the loan burden is significantly larger, making it a "high-stakes, high-reward" game.

The Scale of Competition

XLRI manages a massive cohort of nearly 600 students across two campuses (Jamshedpur & Delhi-NCR) and still maintains a ₹31 LPA average. This speaks volumes about their legacy recruiter base. TISS, with its boutique batch of 65, offers a much more intimate placement process where almost everyone lands a Tier-1 role

The Role Profiles

  • XLRI: Dominates in HR Consulting (Mercer, Aon), Strategy, and Global Leadership programs.

  • TISS: The go-to for Industrial Relations (IR), Labor Laws, and core HR roles in Manufacturing and FMCG.

One major change in 2026: TISS switching fully to CUET-PG has changed the aspirant profile. We’re seeing more diverse backgrounds now compared to the old TISS-NET days

It’s not just the money. XLRI campus life, the 'XL Culture,' and the alumni network in Consulting/Finance are things TISS can't match. TISS feels more like a research institute, XLRI feels like a corporate launchpad.

Honestly, if you convert both, why would anyone pick XLRI over TISS? You save 28 lakhs in interest and fees. That's a flat you can buy 5 years earlier.

True, but XLRI's median at ₹29 LPA for 576 students is a much more impressive feat of placement machinery. Placing 600 people at that level is a different beast altogether.

TISS's top 10% average at ₹49.75 LPA is insane for a batch of 65. That basically means the top 6-7 people are taking home packages that rival IIM Ahmedabad's top tier.
