Title: Consulting Hierarchy: Why Average CTC is a Distraction

Body

If your goal is Management Consulting, average CTC is arguably the least important metric on that spreadsheet.

Consulting recruitment, especially at the MBB (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) level, operates on a completely different pipeline. It’s less about the "average package" and more about the "MBB/Big 4 density" how many students from that specific batch are getting those elite strategy roles.

Here is the breakdown of the colleges you mentioned, not by CTC, but by their standing in the consulting ecosystem:

College Consulting Status Why?
IIM Ahmedabad The Gold Standard Undisputed leader in MBB offers. The "case study" culture is ingrained in the curriculum.
IIM Calcutta The Strategy Hub Historically strong in finance and strategy; massive footprint in legacy consulting firms.
IIM Bangalore The Consulting Powerhouse Heavily skewed towards tech-consulting and strategy roles; highly preferred by top-tier firms.
IIM Lucknow The Consistent Performer Strong consulting pipeline that has only matured over the last decade.
ISB Hyderabad The Lateral Entry Specialist Different beast—1-year program, higher average age, and deep industry connections for post-MBA pivots.

The Consulting Reality Check: Beyond the Offer Letter

If you are aiming for a consulting career, here is what the data doesn't tell you:

  1. The "Big 4" Baseline: Almost all top-tier B-schools place heavily into the Big 4 (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC). If you aren't landing an MBB offer, these firms form the bulk of the consulting intake.

  2. Specialist vs. Generalist: IIM Bangalore, for instance, often sees a massive uptake in tech-consulting roles. If you want "Strategy," IIM Ahmedabad and Calcutta are the traditional strongholds.

  3. The 1-Year Advantage: ISB places differently. Because the batch is already experienced, they aren't competing for "fresh" associate roles they are often lateral hires. This is why their CTC looks comparable to the 2-year IIMs, despite the different program structure.

Don't pick your college based on who has the highest average. Pick it based on who is showing up on Day 0 for the roles you want. An extra 5 LPA in average CTC means nothing if the firms you actually want to work for aren't visiting the campus.

Crucial point about Day 0. If you are an aspirant, go check the placement reports of these colleges specifically for the 'Consulting' sector, not the overall average. It changes the ranking order completely

I always wonder about the 'burnout' aspect. People chase these consulting roles for the tag, but rarely talk about the 80-hour work weeks. Does the college preparation actually help with the reality of the job?

As someone from the '1-year' side, this is spot on. Comparing ISB to a 2-year IIM based on average CTC is comparing apples and oranges. The lateral value-add is the real selling point

Finally, someone said it. Everyone is chasing the average CTC, but they forget that consulting is an 'exclusive' club. If your college isn't a target school for McKinsey/BCG, you're effectively fighting for the scraps.
