Percentile represents the percentage of test-takers who scored less than or equal to you. The following map contextualizes your performance within the competitive tiers:

Elite (99.9+ %ile): Representing the top ~0.01% of candidates (roughly the top 258 test-takers), these scores are the gateway to the most prestigious programs.

Top 1% (99+ %ile): This cohort consists of approximately 2,500 candidates. These scorers are typically the primary focus for the "Old IIMs" (A/B/C) and other top-tier business schools.

New IIM/Tier 2 Target (95–97 %ile): Scoring in this range places you in the top 3–5% of all test-takers, making you a strong contender for New/Baby IIMs and other top-tier private B-schools.

General Entry (80–90 %ile): These percentiles represent the top 10–20% of test-takers. While highly competitive, they offer significant opportunities in a wide variety of respected MBA institutions across India.
Key Statistic: Despite 2.95 lakh registrations, only 2.58 lakh candidates appeared for the exam (an 86% attendance rate). The 100-percentile mark was achieved by just 12 candidates this year.

Roughly 10,000 candidates get serious IIM interview calls. If you're in the 90+ percentile, your focus should shift immediately from 'test-taking' to 'profile-building' and interview preparation. The CAT score gets you the call; your narrative gets you the seat.

The fact that 9 out of 12 people who scored 100 percentile are from non-engineering backgrounds is massive. It really challenges the old narrative that CAT is an 'engineering-only' exam. Diversity in IIM classrooms is only going to get better.
