Understanding the "Maximum Possible CAT Score" for IIM Calcutta Shortlisting

Body

In the context of the IIM Calcutta selection criteria, the "Maximum possible CAT 2025 Total Overall Scaled Score" refers to the highest total scaled score achieved by any candidate who appeared for the CAT 2025 exam, not the theoretical maximum marks (204).

The Mechanics of the Calculation

IIM Calcutta uses a composite score to shortlist candidates for the PI-WAT round. The formula for the CAT component is:

(A / B) times 56
  • A: Your individual CAT 2025 Total Overall Scaled Score.

  • B: The highest Total Overall Scaled Score achieved by any test-taker in that year’s CAT.

Why it’s not the total marks (204):

Because the CAT is conducted in multiple slots, raw scores are normalized into "scaled scores" to account for varying difficulty levels across shifts. Since these scaled scores are used, the baseline ($B$) must also be in the same "scaled" format. IIM Calcutta uses the absolute topper's scaled score as the benchmark to ensure your performance is relative to the best possible result, rather than a theoretical maximum that may not be attainable due to normalization.

If you're building a spreadsheet to estimate your chances, make sure you use the topper's scaled score for "B." Using 204 will drastically underestimate your points and give you a false sense of your standing.

: It’s easy to get confused by the "204" number, but don't base your calculations on that. Your "A" and "B" are both found on your official scorecard/official data releases, and they are both scaled values.

IIMC uses the topper's scaled score as the benchmark ($B$) to keep the comparison fair across the normalized spectrum. It basically rewards you for how close you got to the #1 ranker

This is a crucial distinction. Always remember it's a relative metric you're being measured against the best performer of the year, not the total possible marks on the paper.
