Why Does the Government Spend ₹10,000+ Crore on IITs but Only ₹100-300 Crore on IIMs?

Body

GOVERNMENT IIM BUDGET

Why the government is spending more than 10000 cr on iits and only a mere 100cr to 300cr on iims

If the government will also spend atleast 5000 cr on iims there fees would be decreased and it will come down to 10 to 12 lakhs for the MBA degree and

If the government allocated even ₹5,000 crore to IIMs, MBA fees could potentially drop significantly.

Do you think higher public funding for IIMs would make MBA education more accessible in India?

That’s a good point. Research infrastructure for engineering institutes is definitely expensive, but management education also contributes by producing leaders for industries and policy.

True, but accessibility is also important. If funding helps reduce fees even a little, more students from diverse backgrounds might consider applying to the Indian Institutes of Management.

I think the difference also comes from the nature of research funding. The Indian Institutes of Technology require expensive labs, equipment, and research infrastructure, which probably explains the larger government budgets.

Institutions like the Indian Institutes of Management play a huge role in leadership development, so increasing funding could definitely help reduce the financial burden on MBA aspirants.

Lower fees would definitely make management education more accessible. Right now many students hesitate to apply to top schools like Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad or Indian Institute of Management Bangalore because of the overall cost.
