Does MBA CGPA Really Matter After Graduation? An Observation 1.5 Years Later

Body

One question that comes up repeatedly among MBA students is: how much does CGPA actually matter once you graduate?

I recently came across a thoughtful reflection from an MBA graduate who finished with a CGPA of around 7/10 and has spent about 1.5 years in the industry since then. Their observations felt fairly grounded in real experience.

A few things they noticed:

โ€ข Exchange programs: First-year CGPA did play a role in selection
โ€ข Campus placements: Some companies had a minimum CGPA cutoff (around 6) for shortlisting
โ€ข Networking conversations: Almost no one asked about MBA CGPA
โ€ข Off-campus interviews: Discussions focused much more on work done, impact created, skills, and role fit

What has your experience been like?

โ€ข Is CGPA a major pressure point on campus?
โ€ข Did your CGPA matter after your first role?
โ€ข Do hiring manager/recruiters actually consider MBA CGPA beyond initial cutoffs?

I just graduated last year and got placed through campus. During the placement process my CGPA only mattered for the initial shortlist. After that, interviews were completely about my internship projects and problem-solving approach.

On campus the competition for grades can get intense because even a small difference in CGPA can affect shortlisting for certain companies. But in most guest lectures and networking sessions, recruiters seem far more interested in projects, internships, and leadership roles.

CGPA definitely feels like a pressure point during the first year, especially because of exchange programs and some placement shortlists, but when i spoke about it with my seniors they keep telling that once you land your first role, the importance drops quickly.

Coming from a corporate background and now preparing for exams like the Common Admission Test, itโ€™s interesting to see this discussion. In my company, when we hire MBAs, we barely look at CGPA after the initial screening. Practical experience and communication skills matter much more.
