From 2 to 22: The Incredible 65-Year Evolution of IIMs

Body

The Phases of Expansion

  • The Founding Era (1961–1996): Established the "Old IIM" legacy. Starting with Ahmedabad and Calcutta, this era saw the addition of IIM Bangalore (1973), IIM Lucknow (1984), and IIMs Indore and Kozhikode (1996). These institutes set the gold standard for management education, research, and corporate leadership in India.

  • The Expansion Era (2007–2011): This period marked a structural shift to scale management education, introducing the second generation of IIMs like Shillong, Rohtak, Ranchi, Raipur, Trichy, Kashipur, and Udaipur to address the rising demand for professional business leaders.

  • The New Generation (2015–2026): Focused on regional inclusivity and broader access, this phase added IIMs in Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Visakhapatnam, Jammu, and most recently, IIM Guwahati (2026). Additionally, the transformation of legacy institutes like NITIE into IIM Mumbai (2023) added further prestige to the ecosystem.

Shaping the Future

Over 65 years, the IIMs have transitioned from "diploma-granting" bodies to degree-granting autonomous institutions. They now serve as the bedrock of Indian entrepreneurship, corporate strategy, and public policy. With the inauguration of IIM Guwahati in 2026, the network has reached a new milestone, ensuring that high-quality management education is accessible across the diverse geography of India.

The most impressive part isn't just the number of campuses, but how they’ve adapted their curricula from standard MBAs to IPM (Integrated Programme in Management) and specialized tech-management courses.

65 years of history... the Ford Foundation and Harvard Business School influence in the early 60s really set a foundation that we’re still benefiting from today

People often compare the "Old" vs "New" IIMs based on salary, but the real impact is the decentralization of elite education. Having an IIM in the Northeast (Guwahati) is a huge win for regional balance.

IIM Mumbai (the former NITIE) was a game-changer. Converting such an established institute into an IIM really bolstered the brand value of the "new" additions.

It’s wild to think that it took 12 years to go from 2 to 3 IIMs, and now we are at 22. The scaling effort over the last decade has been massive.
