In need of some guidance.

Non-Engineer, bad at Maths, starting in July. Is There Hope? Someone tell me how to solve quant? Also is there someone who came from non engineering background, was poor at maths and started this late, and still got into their dream B school???ย

  • YES, there is hope! I was horrible at maths, like genuinely scared of numbers. Iโ€™m a psychology grad and started prep in July with 0 confidence in quant. But I took it one topic at a time. Started with basic arithmetic, watched free YouTube videos (Takshzila, Rodha), and stuck to the basics for 2 months. In mocks, I focused on accuracy over speed. Trust me, it worked. I scored 94 percentile in QA and converted IIM Rohtak. So yes, itโ€™s totally possible if youโ€™re consistent and donโ€™t panic. Youโ€™re not late, just start now and stick to a plan.ย

Math was my nightmare. I didnโ€™t touch math after 10th. When I started in July, I was overwhelmed by even percentages and ratios. But slowly, I began with NCERTs of class 6 to 10 and used YouTube to revise basics. Then I did 10 questions of quant daily, no matter how tough or easy. It took 3 months to get a grip. In CAT, I attempted only 14 questions in QA, but got 11 right. That gave me a solid percentile. You donโ€™t need to solve everything, just play to your strengths. Good B-schools look at the whole profile, donโ€™t give up now.ย

Bro, started my prep on July 10th last year, literally opened my first QA book then. As a mass media graduate, I used to think CAT was only for engineers. But I cracked MICA with 92 percentile. How? I stopped comparing myself to toppers. Focused on Arithmetic like a maniac. Profit-Loss, Time-Speed, Averages, I drilled those till they became muscle memory. I never got comfortable with Geometry or P&C, and thatโ€™s okay. Play smart. Solve the 13-14 easy/moderate ones in CAT and leave the rest. CAT is a strategy game, not a math exam!

Hey, Iโ€™m prepping right now and started this July too. Honestly, I was very demotivated seeing others solve mocks like pros while I was stuck with percentages. But you know what helped? Creating a โ€˜Quant Journalโ€™. Every time I made a mistake, I noted the concept and made sure I understood it. I also joined a Telegram group for daily practice questions and watched 1โ€“2 short videos daily on weak areas. Progress is slow, but itโ€™s happening. If youโ€™re consistent, even a non-math person can get good enough to clear CAT QA with confidence.

I was in the same boat. I took commerce in school to avoid hardcore math and still ended up giving CAT. Started in July, panicked a lot, but eventually broke QA into manageable pieces, Arithmetic > Algebra > Geometry > Number Systems. Donโ€™t try to finish the syllabus, just build conceptual clarity. Practice questions daily and give topic-wise tests. I used Arun Sharma and Unacademy videos. Initially, I got 3-4 questions right in mocks, but by October I was hitting 15+ in QA. Keep grinding, CAT rewards consistency, not brilliance.
