Is this ‘Tracker Script’ hack for updates actually real?

Body

I recently saw people discussing tracker scripts that notify you whenever a website’s content changes. I was wondering if this can be used specifically for college admission updates (like shortlist releases, waitlist movement, result announcements, etc.).

Has anyone here tried using something like this for admission related sites?

  • Does it actually work reliably for college portals/websites?

  • Can it detect updates like new PDFs, status changes, or portal updates?

  • Any risks (like getting blocked or missing updates)?

I’m trying to figure out if setting this up is genuinely useful or just sounds cool in theory.

If you really want to automate it, don't waste time on the login portal. Instead, track the 'News/Announcements' or 'Admissions' homepage of the B-school. If the status changes to 'Results Declared,' that's the only cue you need to manually log in. Don't try to script the login it's a recipe for getting your account locked for too many failed attempts/bot activity

A massive issue with these scripts is 'false positives.' A lot of college sites have dynamic elements like countdown timers, rotating ads, or live chat widgets that change every few seconds. The script will ping you constantly thinking there's an update, but it's just the page code shifting. It's a massive source of false hope/anxiety

Be very careful with the polling frequency (the time interval between checks). If you set it to check every 10 seconds, some institutional firewalls will flag your IP address as a bot and block you. Keep the interval at least 15–30 minutes to stay safe and avoid getting locked out exactly when the results drop

Used these for my own results back in the day. The tool 'Distill Web Monitor' is the gold standard for this, but here's the catch: it works perfectly for public notice pages, but struggles hard with pages behind a login screen. If you're trying to monitor your personal dashboard, the script often fails because it can't handle the session cookies/login state. Save your energy for the public boards
