Mapping the Total Seats for CAT 2026

Body

The "Big Batch" Advantage (IIM L, K, B, M)

Institutes like IIM Lucknow (675 seats) and IIM Kozhikode (600 seats) offer a massive alumni network and a diverse pool of recruiters.

  • Pro: More companies visit to accommodate the large batch.

  • Con: Internal competition for the "Dream" consulting and PE roles is much higher.

The "Boutique" Advantage (FMS, SPJIMR)

FMS Delhi (250 seats) and SPJIMR Mumbai (275 seats) maintain a smaller footprint.

  • Pro: Highly personalized placement processes and lower student-to-faculty ratios.

  • Con: Admission is statistically much harder; at FMS, you are competing for one of the few seats with an insanely high ROI.

The 2026 Shift: IIM Mumbai (550 seats)

Now that the former NITIE is officially IIM Mumbai, its 550 seats have become some of the most sought-after in the country. It has effectively increased the "Old IIM" seat pool by nearly 12%, giving aspirants a better chance at a Tier-1 brand in the financial capital.

reminder these numbers include all categories (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS). If you are a General candidate, divide these numbers by 2 to see the 'Unreserved' seats. The competition is even tighter than the chart suggests

That’s why I’m targeting IIM Lucknow. With 675 seats, the probability of conversion after getting a call is much higher than at the smaller IIMs. It’s all about the funnel.

"Only 250 seats at FMS? If 3 lakh people give CAT, that means your chances of getting into FMS are roughly 0.08%. This is why 'Backup' colleges are not an option, they are a necessity
