MBA Is Still Worth It - If You Have the Caliber and the Right Business School

Body

Every few months, the same debate returns: Is an MBA still worth it?

A recent report highlighted that graduates from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta achieved 100% placements with a 5.05% increase in salaries this year, showing that top institutions continue to attract strong recruiter interest. According to coverage by The Indian Express:

  • Highest domestic package: ₹1.45 crore

  • Highest international offer: ₹1.10 crore per annum

These numbers raise an important question:

Is an MBA Still Worth It in 2026?

The value of an MBA today depends on two critical factors:

  • Your individual caliber

  • The quality of the business school you attend

Top institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Management offer advantages that go far beyond classroom learning.

What a strong MBA ecosystem provides:

  • Powerful alumni networks that open doors across industries

  • Access to top recruiters in consulting, finance, tech, and FMCG

  • Industry exposure through internships and live projects

  • Rigorous academic frameworks that sharpen strategic thinking

However, the degree itself does not automatically guarantee success.

Students who truly benefit from an MBA are those who actively develop:

  • Problem-solving ability

  • Leadership and team management skills

  • Analytical thinking and data interpretation

  • Clear communication and storytelling skills

An MBA is no longer a guaranteed shortcut to success.

But for students who combine strong personal capability with the right business school, it remains one of the most powerful career accelerators available today.

Interesting perspective, but I’m not sure placements at one top school fully answer whether an MBA is “worth it.” Institutes like Indian Institute of Management Calcutta have strong recruiter networks and brand value, which naturally leads to impressive placement numbers. The bigger question is about the average outcome across different tiers of B-schools, where ROI can vary a lot. For many aspirants, the decision probably depends less on the degree itself and more on which institute they get into and the opportunity cost involved.
